Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for optimal flavor)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped (plus extra for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups cooked rice (jasmine, basmati, or brown rice)

Optional Toppings and Additions

  • Sesame seeds
  • Sliced cucumber
  • Kimchi
  • Pickled vegetables
  • Vegetables such as bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, or spinach
  • 1 egg (fried, for added richness)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Rice: Rinse 1 cup of rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine rinsed rice with 2 cups of water in a pot, rice cooker, or Instant Pot depending on your equipment.
  2. Cook the Rice:
    • Stovetop Method: Bring rice and water to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit covered for 5 minutes before fluffing.
    • Rice Cooker: Add the rinsed rice and water, close lid, and cook according to manufacturer’s instructions.
    • Instant Pot: Seal lid and cook on high pressure for 3 minutes, then allow natural pressure release.
  3. Cook the Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the ground beef. Break it apart with a spatula and brown until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Add Aromatics: Drain excess fat if necessary. Add minced garlic and ginger to the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Season the Beef: Stir in soy sauce, sesame oil, and chopped green onions. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes for flavors to meld.
  6. Assemble the Bowl: Spoon cooked rice into bowls. Layer the seasoned ground beef over the rice.
  7. Add Vegetables and Toppings: Add any desired vegetables like bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, or spinach. Garnish with extra green onions, sesame seeds, sliced cucumber, kimchi, or pickled vegetables. Optionally, top with a fried egg for extra richness.

Notes

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for best flavor and juiciness.
  • For gluten-free option, substitute soy sauce with tamari.
  • Rice can be jasmine, basmati, or brown according to preference.
  • Adjust vegetables and toppings to your taste and availability.
  • Cooking times may vary slightly depending on your stove and cookware.
  • Add a fried egg on top to make the dish more hearty and authentic.
