Ingredients

Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1/2 medium onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

Liquids and Canned Goods

  • 1 (14 ounce) can diced tomatoes with juices
  • 1/3 cup chicken or beef broth
  • 3/4 cup heavy/whipping cream

Dry and Cheese

  • 1 pound uncooked potato gnocchi
  • 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning (or to taste)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Brown the beef and onions: In a skillet over medium-high heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion for 7-10 minutes until the beef is browned and the onions are softened. Spoon out excess fat if there’s a lot.
  2. Add garlic and seasoning: Stir in the minced garlic and Italian seasoning, cooking briefly until fragrant.
  3. Combine tomatoes, broth, cream, and gnocchi: Add the diced tomatoes with their juices, chicken or beef broth, heavy cream, and uncooked potato gnocchi to the skillet. Stir well to combine. Bring the sauce to a gentle bubble.
  4. Simmer covered: Cover the pan, reduce heat to medium, and cook for 5 minutes to allow the gnocchi to cook through and flavors to meld.
  5. Uncover and thicken: Remove the lid, stir the mixture, and continue cooking for a few more minutes until the gnocchi is tender and the sauce has thickened to your liking.
  6. Finish with Parmesan and seasoning: Stir in the freshly grated Parmesan cheese and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Using lean ground beef reduces excess grease; drain fat as needed.
  • If the sauce thickens too much, add a splash more broth to loosen it.
  • Freshly grated Parmesan cheese adds the best flavor compared to pre-grated varieties.
  • Adjust Italian seasoning to your taste or substitute with a mix of dried basil, oregano, and thyme.
  • This dish is best served hot and fresh to enjoy the creamy texture.
