A warm, comforting Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal made on the stovetop. This hearty breakfast combines tender apples sautéed with cinnamon, creamy whole milk, and rolled oats sweetened with pure maple syrup to start your day with cozy flavors and wholesome ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit

  • 2 medium apples (any kind)

Dairy

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cups whole milk

Grains

  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats

Spices and Sweeteners

  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • pinch salt
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup (or brown sugar, adjust to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Apples: Peel and core the apples, then chop them into approximately ½-inch pieces or your preferred size to ensure even cooking.
  2. Melt Butter and Sauté Apples: In a medium 3-quart saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped apples and cinnamon, stirring to combine. Cook, stirring occasionally, for about 4 to 5 minutes until the apples start to soften but are not yet mushy, as they will continue cooking later.
  3. Add Milk, Oats, and Salt: Pour in the whole milk along with the rolled oats and a pinch of salt. Stir to combine all ingredients evenly in the pot.
  4. Boil and Simmer: Increase the heat to bring the mixture to a boil, watching carefully to prevent the milk from boiling over. Once boiling, immediately reduce heat to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 6 to 8 minutes until the oats have softened and most of the liquid is absorbed.
  5. Sweeten and Serve: Stir in the pure maple syrup (or brown sugar) to taste. Serve the oatmeal warm, enjoying the blend of tender apples, cinnamon, and creamy oats.

Notes

  • You can use any variety of apples, but sweeter types like Fuji or Gala work well for oatmeal.
  • Adjust the sweetness by adding more or less maple syrup or brown sugar according to your preference.
  • If using brown sugar instead of maple syrup, add it towards the end of cooking and stir well to dissolve.
  • To make this recipe dairy-free, substitute the milk and butter with plant-based alternatives like almond milk and vegan butter.
  • Keep a close eye when bringing the mixture to a boil to prevent milk from boiling over.
  • For a thicker oatmeal, cook a few minutes longer, stirring frequently to avoid sticking.
